TUSCALOOSA, ALA Sept. 8, 2016 – JaMia Sneed of Tuscaloosa has been awarded a $1,000 scholarship by Castle Lanterra Properties (CLP). The CLP Scholarship Program was launched earlier this year for residents and families living in the company’s properties throughout the East, South, and Midwestern U.S.

Sneed, who resides at CLP’s Heights at Skyland community in Tuscaloosa, is studying respiratory therapy at Shelton State Community College in Tuscaloosa. A graduate of Hillcrest High School, she initially contemplated a career in either respiratory therapy or nursing, and opted for the former because of the patient-to-patient contact and the prospect of a long career. “I’ve spoken to a number of people in the field, many who have been respiratory therapists for 30 years. I was impressed by that.”

As part of CLP’s inaugural scholarship program competition, “we chose to have students write an essay covering an issue of personal, local, national or international concern,” said Elie Rieder, CLP’s founder and CEO. “The goal is to encourage self-expression and consideration of the world today and their role in the community.”

For her essay, Sneed focused on the importance and impact of higher education. Noting that only one member of her immediate and extended family, an aunt, has a college degree, she said, “I wanted to impress upon the younger generation the impact and importance of higher education. I wanted to stress that college is by no means easy –it requires dedication.  At the same time, while adults can deliver that message, you really need someone around your own age to deliver that message, and I wanted to be that person,” she said.

Sneed was informed by Heights at Skyland’s property manager that she had been selected to receive a scholarship, and “I was shocked,” she said. “It’s awesome that Castle Lanterra Properties cares about their tenants furthering their education.”

Sneed is one of three inaugural winners of scholarships offered by CLP. Howard University senior Yolanda Toby, whose family resides at Harbor Pointe in Bayonne, N.J., was a recipient of a $5,000 scholarship. Obtaining a $1,000 scholarship was Chauntea Robinson, a resident of Midpointe in Chicago, and student at Illinois State University.

CLP tenants eligible for the program include high school seniors, graduates and post-secondary undergraduates planning to enroll in full-time undergraduate study at an accredited two- or four-year institution. “We received many strong applications from students who recognize the value of their community and who continue to work diligently to pursue their goals,” said Rieder. “Our objective is to support our community connection and the hard work of our resident students and their families.”
