Free Community Events Include Art and Exercise Classes, Inspirational Lectures

ALLENDALE, N.J., Dec. 20, 2013 – The Atrium Assisted Living at The Allendale Community for Mature Living will present a variety of activities including craft-making and exercise classes in January. Each of the following programs is free and open to the public:

  • Tues., Jan. 7: Participants who have an interest in fine art will enjoy, “Think & Talk with Darby” to be held at 11 a.m. in the Activities Room. Darby Cartun developed the “Reflections on Art” program to promote community connections among the seniors using fine art as a vehicle.
  • Fri., Jan. 10: Rabbi Gerald Friedman will present an inspirational discussion entitled, “The Long Life” at 3:30 p.m. in the Activities Room.
  • Tues., Jan. 14: “Reflections on Art with Darby” will be held at 11 a.m. in the Activities Room. Participants can work with Darby Cartun, who developed the program to promote community connections among the seniors using fine art as a vehicle.
  • Wed., Jan. 15 : “History of Vegetable Ivory Buttons Show & Tell from 1880’s to Present Day” will be presented by Mary Stampleman, The Atrium’s Director of Therapeutic Recreation and Public Relations, at 2 p.m. in the Activities Room. Stampleman is a past president of the NJ State Button Society and Bergen Button Club.
  • Thurs., Jan. 16 : A watercolor art class will be led by instructor and artist Lorraine Strangfeld at 10:30 a.m. in the Activities Room.
  • Sun.-Sat., Jan. 19 to 25 : National Activity Professionals Week will be celebrated. This year’s theme is, “Gateway to Activities.” The week-long event will feature education sessions and displays of residents’ hobbies. Activities professionals contribute to the quality of life for their residents.
  • Sun., Jan. 19 : Happy Hour featuring the musical talent of Pete Visalli will be presented at 3:30 p.m. in the Lounge.
  • Mon., Jan. 20 :A slide show entitled, “Felt-making from the Asian Steppes” will be presented by Mary Stampleman, The Atrium’s Director of Therapeutic Recreation and Public Relations, at 2 p.m. in the Activities Room.
  • Tues., Jan. 21 :Yoga for Seniors with Naama Meluban will be held at 9:30 a.m. in the Cinema. Meluban teaches gentle chair yoga, which is suited to seniors with diverse physical abilities and needs.
  • Wed., Jan. 22:The Hackensack University Medical Center (HUMC) Senior Platinum Plus Program presents “Understanding Psoriasis” by Stephanie Kramer from Psoriasis Speaks and The Patient Advocate Program to be held at 2 p.m. in the Cinema. The presentation is part of the acute-care hospital’s comprehensive wellness concierge service.
  • Thurs., Jan. 23 : “Antique Lace & Tools Show & Tell” will be presented by Mary Stampleman, The Atrium’s Director of Therapeutic Recreation and Public Relations, at 2 p.m. in the Activities Room.
  • Thurs., Jan. 23: A discussion on “Leadership” will be presented by Rabbi Gerald Friedman at 2 p.m. in the Activities Room.
  • Sat., Jan. 25 : Tai Chi for Seniors will be taught by Hasmig Mekjian, a teacher and practitioner for more than 30 years, at 11 a.m. in the Cinema. This ancient Chinese tradition has evolved into a graceful form of exercise that’s now used for stress reduction and a variety of other health conditions.
