Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel in South Orange to Host and Teach Melton Jewish Adult Education Series, Starting in October
Area Residents Welcome to Register and Attend Courses Taught by TSTI Rabbis and Religious School Teacher

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., September 26, 2017 – The Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning, a renowned adult education series of courses, is coming to Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel (TSTI), the Reform synagogue in South Orange. The program, which provides adults with a comprehensive understanding of Jewish thought, practice and history, is open to the wider community. TSTI will host two courses as follows:

  • “The Purposes and Rhythms of Jewish Living,” a two-pronged course that will be taught by Rabbi Daniel Cohen and Max Weisenfeld, a religious school teacher and vice president of education on the TSTI Board of Trustees. Classes begin on Wednesday, October 18, 2017 and will meet weekly from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. The course gives participants a framework to integrate past and future learning while challenging them to find their voice amidst Judaism’s diverse tradition.
  • The Purposes of Jewish Living explores both ancient and modern responses to many of the major issues of Jewish thought and theology.
  • The Rhythms of Jewish Living examines a wide variety of Jewish sources to discover the deeper meanings underlying Jewish holidays, lifecycle observances and Jewish practice.

The Purposes and Rhythms of Jewish Living runs through May 30, 2018; there are no classes on November 22 and December 27, 2017 and February 21 and April 11, 2018. The annual fee is $500 for TSTI members and $675 for JCC and partner synagogue members. The cost includes books and supplies.

  • Rabbi Alexandra Klein is teaching “Foundations of Jewish Family Living: Values for Jewish Parents to Share with Their Children” which meets one Sunday a month, starting on October 29. The course provides a thought-provoking encounter with the core values of Judaism and brings to life the master stories from Jewish tradition and the profound messages they convey. Participants will be able to bring the Jewish conversations home to share with their young children, providing them with the learning, language, and confidence to be a teacher to their own children. Class will meet from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m. on: October 29, November 19, December 17, January 28, February 11, March 4, April 22, May 20 and June 10. The fee is $100 for TSTI members, $180 for the community and includes books and supplies.

No knowledge of Hebrew is required to enroll in the Florence Melton School of Adult Jewish Learning. The program is administered through the JCC of Greater MetroWest New Jersey. For more information and to register for either course, contact Rhonda Lillianthal at or (973) 530-3519. Checks are made payable to JCC MetroWest.
