Inserra Supermarkets Celebrating 10-year Anniversary of its In-store Dietitian Program This Fall

LYNDHURST, N.J., Oct. 19, 2016 – Julie Harrington, R.D., registered dietitian of Inserra Supermarkets’ ShopRite of Lyndhurst, mixes up a winning recipe of fun and learning at her in-store cooking classes for teens each month and culinary camps for kids of all ages. This fall, Inserra is celebrating the 10-year anniversary of its In-store Dietitian Program, which the company continues to expand.

Pictured are teens at the recent “pizza party” cooking class and young chefs-in-training learning about the U.S.D.A.’s MyPlate.

The camp for the younger group, ages 6-12, centered around the U.S.D.A.’s MyPlate to educate the campers on balanced and healthy eating. Each day, the children had a nutrition lesson and toured a different section of the grocery store to better understand how to make healthy choices. They also created recipes and became taste explorers by taste testing and evaluating each food they tried. With safety in mind and under the supervision of Harrington, the children got increasingly comfortable mixing, chopping, stirring, and creating recipes on their own.

The teen camp also included lessons on nutrition, kitchen safety and knife skills, and the group enjoyed learning how to create healthy baking alternatives, such as the camp favorite – chickpea chocolate chip cookies. The teens also took part in a friendly cooking challenge. With a budget of $15 and access to items in the dietitian’s fridge and pantry, each group made and presented a nutritious meal and snack. To the delight of Harrington, the teens let their creativity and nutrition knowledge shine through with one group adding pumpkin puree to their pizza sauce to boost the meal’s fiber content.

Harrington hosts a range of in-store health and wellness events each month. In addition to culinary classes for kids and adults, events include a walking club, nutrition counseling, health screenings, diabetes classes, product demos and much more.
