LYNDHURST, N.J., Sept. 2, 2014 – September, which is National Cholesterol Education Month, is a good time to learn about food and lifestyle choices that help people of all ages – from seniors to young Americans and children – prevent or manage high cholesterol. Throughout the month, ShopRite of Lyndhurst, an Inserra Supermarkets store, will host a wellness series led by Julie Harrington, R.D., in-store registered dietitian. The following free events are being held for local residents. All programs are open to the public, held at ShopRite of Lyndhurst and do not require advance registration, unless otherwise noted:

Thurs., Sept 4, 11, 18 & 25 – Walking Club, 8 a.m. Looking for a way to exercise and beat the unpredictable weather of September? Join this weekly walking club for a one-mile trek throughout the store. The starting line is the Dietitian's Corner. Membership cards and prizes are awarded to all participants.

Fri., Sept. 5 – Get the Facts on Flax, 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. Learn simple tips and tricks for how to incorporate flax into your diet for a heart-healthy lifestyle.

Sat. & Sun., Sept. 6 & 7 – Gluten and Allergy Free Festival, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. Visit your Inserra in-store dietitian team at the Meadowlands Expo Center, 355 Plaza Dr.,
Secaucus, N.J.

Mon., Sept. 8 – Go Nuts for Heart Health: Nut Butter Tasting, 1 – 3 p.m. Stop by the Dietitian's Corner to try fun, flavorful nut butters and learn how this heart-healthy condiment can enhance your well-being.

Mon., Sept. 8 – Free Cholesterol Screening, 4 – 8 p.m. Knowing your numbers is a great first step toward preventing or controlling heart disease. Learn some heart-healthy habits too.

Mon., Sept. 15 – Heart-y Cooking Class, 2 p.m. & 5 p.m. Learn easy-to-incorporate heart-healthy cooking methods for preparing a delicious meal. Pre-registration is required.

Wed., Sept. 17 – Exercise Extravaganza, Strength Class 5 – 5:45 p.m., Zumba Class 6 – 6:45 p.m. ShopRite of Lyndhurst and Ultra Fitness are partnering to combat heart disease and fight hunger in this Partners in Caring fundraiser. Fee: $5 donation to Partners in Caring per exercise class, plus the purchase of canned goods to use as weights and then donate to a local food pantry. Raindate: Wed., Sept. 24.

Thurs., Sept. 18 – Cooking Class with Chef Joe, 1 p.m. Learn from our very own culinary team of Chef Joe and dietitian Julie how to cook up a healthy dish tonight. Recipe cards will be available. Pre-registration is required.

Fri., Sept. 19 – High Fiber Friday, noon – 2 p.m. Remain fit and full with fiber. Stop by the Dietitian's Corner for the latest high-fiber finds and "how to" tips for increasing fiber intake.

Fri., Sept. 19 – LiveRight with ShopRite Kids' Day Cooking Class (ages 6 and up), 4 – 4:45 p.m. & 5:30 – 6:15 p.m. Youngsters can create and try new things while preparing a simple, healthy snack. Recipe cards will be distributed to all participants. Pre-registration is required.

Thurs., Sept. 25 & Tues., Sept. 30 – Produce Pick, 11 – 1 p.m. Each week's produce pick will be the "star" of a new dish prepared by the dietitian. Stop by for a sample and recipe!

Tues., Sept. 30 – Veggie Power Cooking Class, 3 p.m. & 5:30 p.m. Going meatless once a week improves heart health and doesn't mean sacrificing taste. Learn how to prepare a vegetarian meal that is delicious and nutritious. Pre-registration is required.
