From Hallways to Woodlands, Heritage Pointe Walkers Keep Fit Year ‘Round
Teaneck Retirees Walk Their Way to Fitness, Outside and In, as They Exercise and Socialize

TEANECK, N.J., Feb. 8, 2010 - For a hearty troupe of residents at Heritage Pointe of Teaneck, living next door to the Teaneck Creek Conservancy is a major bonus of the lifestyle at this elegant full-service rental retirement community. The group comprises avid walkers who are continuing what they've always done to stay fit, in beautiful surroundings that include 46 acres of woodlands, in Teaneck, N.J., right outside Heritage Pointe's door.

Walking in all but the worst weather "keeps us going," said Anna Marie Dobler, who moved to Heritage Pointe two years ago, and credits her parents for raising a family of daily walkers. In fact, she still maintains such a healthy stride that Gerry Wagner, another Heritage Pointe walker, said she sets a challenging pace for him and the others who have formed the group at the community. The residents include Ethel Solomon, Arlene Rubinson, Naomi Kantey, Lou Ciulla, Mary Plocharski and Bill Rini, who share a love of the outdoors, physical fitness and the companionship they enjoy while walking.

Rubinson often walks with Rini, an avid outdoorsman and nature buff who serves as a guide to the Conservancy plant life. Aside from Rini's impromptu lessons, Rubinson says walking helps her "stay in the best shape possible for maximum health and wellness."

Naomi Kantey noted that walking outdoors allows them to "see the beauty of the universe," and that although they all prefer to walk outside, walking the halls of Heritage Pointe is a great alternative when weather is a factor. The well-appointed residence has four stories, and "four laps around the halls equal a mile," explained Kantey. "We've all walked a lot of miles here." She said the group often walks through the adjacent neighborhoods and some of them walk into town as well.

Ethel Solomon moved to Heritage Pointe from Florida six years ago to be near her grown children, and has been walking around the community ever since. "I used to walk with friends in the mornings at Riverside Square in Hackensack, but it's certainly more beautiful here," she said of the Conservancy. Lou Ciulla, a retired actor who once studied alongside Robert Redford, occasionally entertains the others by reciting Shakespeare or lines from Cyrano de Bergerac while they walk.

Aside from the camaraderie, walking together has revealed some unknown connections and "small world" stories among the group, such as discovering that Ciulla's son was Dobler's dog sitter or that some of them grew up or raised families in the same neighborhoods. When they aren't walking, they also all enjoy the many activities offered at Heritage Pointe, citing the cultural programs and current affairs lectures in particular.

"Staying active and healthy is an important part of the aging process for all seniors," said Donna Zayat, executive director at Heritage Pointe. "It is great to see these residents, who are between 70 and 93 years old, keep an exercise routine and become great friends in the process."

Heritage Pointe of Teaneck offers carefree rental living for independent retirees with a host of hotel-style amenities, Wellness Center, and social and recreational events such as off-site trips, lectures and lessons, and intergenerational programming with local children.
