SOUTH ORANGE, N.J., November 22, 2017 – Temple Sharey Tefilo-Israel (TSTI) in South Orange invites the public to a Shabbat Scholar and Supper program featuring guest speaker, Roya Hakakian, a Jewish Iranian journalist, on Friday, December 8, 2017. The service, open to all, will be at 6:00 p.m., followed by a community dinner at 7:00 p.m. with Hakakian, whose topic is “Why Does Iran Keep Its Jews?” Advance registration for the dinner is required; the cost is $25 for TSTI members, $36 for non-members who are registered by Friday, December 5; post-deadline pricing is $36 for TSTI members, $45 non-members. Hakakian’s opinion columns, essays and book reviews have appeared in the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and NPR’s “All Things Considered” among many news outlets. She currently serves as an editorial board member of World Affairs Journal and is a founding member of the Iran Human Rights Documentation Center, an independent non-profit organization that monitors the human rights situation in Iran. Her memoir of growing up a Jewish teenager in post-revolutionary Iran, “Journey from the Land of No: A Girlhood Caught in Revolutionary Iran” (Crown) has been a celebrated Freshman Experience book at many U.S. colleges.
