Panel Discussion will address the Impact of “Experiential Retail” on CRE Industry

TEANECK, N.J., May 31, 2017 – Colliers International’s Nancy Erickson and Cushman & Wakefield’s Brian Whitmer will participate in a panel discussion focused on current retail trends during NAIOP New Jersey’s next Chapter Meeting, “The Rise of Experiential Retail.” The event will be held on Tuesday, June 6, 2017, at the Teaneck Marriott at Glenpointe in Teaneck, beginning with a cocktail reception and networking at 5 p.m. followed by dinner and the program.

To successfully compete in today’s omnichannel retail world, brick-and-mortar stores in malls, town centers and urban shopping districts are attracting shoppers by providing personalized, interactive experiences that offer the “Triple F”: food, fitness and fun. Whitmer, senior director with Cushman & Wakefield’s Metropolitan Area Capital Markets Group based in East Rutherford, N.J., will provide a retail market update that addresses the impact of this “experiential retail” trend on commercial real estate developers and property owners.

“We’re at the forefront of experiencing the dynamics of retailing adapt to e commerce,” noted Whitmer. “Food, fun and fitness are filling voids, along with the repurposing of large boxes for last-mile distribution. This is all happening in real time, which makes the discussion to be had at the event all that much more interesting and provoking.”

Erickson, executive managing director and Colliers’ Retail Team leader in New Jersey, will discuss key takeaways from the recently-concluded International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) 2017 conference, as well as examine the challenges of developing the optimal retail tenant mix in mixed use developments, specifically at Bell Works in Holmdel, Montgomery Place in Montgomery and Valley & Bloom in Montclair.

“At the ICSC Conference we were reminded of the importance of the communication between developers and retailers as retailers work to create more engaging shopping experiences. Often in mixed use developments retail is an afterthought,” Erickson said. “The column widths of the office and residential requirements above the retail portion will define the width of the retail spaces and storefronts. This can make leasing to your national retailers difficult as the sizes are now pre-defined.”

Clark Machemer with Rockefeller Group will lead the discussion, which will also feature Herbert Eilberg, chief investment officer with Urban Edge Properties, and Mark Pottschmidt, co-founder of Stanbery Development. . Additional topics will include how developers and owners are repositioning malls and other retail properties; which players are expanding or contracting and why; an update on cap rates; and current trends in financing by domestic and foreign investors.
