Company Overview
Encelium Technologies (http://www.encelium.com/) is a technology development company specializing in integrated lighting control systems for commercial buildings. Encelium manufactures the Energy Control SystemTM (ECS), the most advanced lighting control solution for commercial buildings on the market. The system reduces lighting use and energy costs at a faster rate than other environmental measures and has an average payback of two to five years. Since the company's founding in 2001, ECS has been installed in more than 25 million square feet of commercial space across North America and Europe. The company has experienced tremendous growth, posting a 200% annual increase during the last two years.
Energy Control SystemTM (ECS)Encelium's ECS is the only lighting control system on the market that integrates and deploys six energy management strategies on a facility-wide basis, giving property owners and managers unprecedented digital control. Those strategies are:
- Daylight harvesting to automatically adjust light levels, taking into account the natural sunlight entering the building.
- Personal control to give occupants control of their own workspace light levels from their desktop computers.
- Occupancy control to automatically turn lights on and off - or dim them - based on detection.
- Smart-time scheduling to provide scheduled switching or dimming of lights in areas of a building where occupancy sensors are not appropriate.
- Task tuning to enable the user to set default light levels to suit the particular task or use of a workspace in order to eliminate overlighting.
- Variable load shedding to allow for the automatic reduction of electrical demand by shedding light loads dynamically - through dimming or switching - either to shave peak demand or to respond to a utility price or demand response signal.
Installing ECS enhances a building's ability to achieve U.S. Green Building Council's Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification by contributing between 12 and 18 points, depending on the specific applications and other factors. It contributes in four of six categories including sustainable sites, energy, indoor environmental quality, and innovation in design. ECS also can facilitate a building's compliance with ASHRAE 90.1, EPAct, Title 24 of the California Code of Regulations, and various utility rebate programs.
Case Studies
In 2002, Encelium installed its ECS in Toronto General Hospital's R. Fraser Elliot Building, which houses the hospital's executive offices, administration, research facilities, food service and emergency medical services. The six-story, mixed-use commercial building, which was constructed in 2001, houses the hospital's executive offices, administration, research facilities, food service, and emergency medical services. The installation included retrofitting the existing fixtures with electronic dimming ballasts and high performance lamps, and installing occupancy and photo sensors, low voltage controllers and Encelium control hardware and software in 95,000 square feet of the building. The project has enabled the hospital to achieve an annual energy cost reduction of $47,000 (Canadian), reduce its lighting energy consumption by 50-75% and its carbon dioxide emissions, and realize a payback from its energy savings in less than four years.Leadership
Tony Marano, president and chief executive officer, has held a number of top leadership positions throughout his distinguished career. Prior to joining Encelium, Marano was the chief executive officer of the Americas for Cushman & Wakefield in New York and had also served as that company's global chief operating officer. In addition, he was the vice president of the business services division at Lucent Technologies as well as the vice president of global real estate for Lucent after its spinoff from AT&T. Marano was named the 1999 "Corporate Real Estate Executive of the Year" by Commercial Property News.
Terry Mocherniak, chief operating officer, possesses more than 16 years of experience in the advanced lighting technology sector. Prior to Encelium, Mocherniak was the managing partner of Value Added Ventures Corporation, a Toronto, Canada-based venture capital firm. In addition, he co-founded and served as the chief executive officer of Lumion Corporation, an electronic ballast and lighting control manufacturer based in Canada.
Marc Hoffknecht, chief technology officer, has more than 18 years of experience in software development and 12 years of experience in electronic hardware and firmware design. He is an acknowledged specialist in embedded microprocessor systems and communications technologies. Prior to Encelium, he was the vice president of research and development of Lumion Corporation.Eddie Johnson, vice president of sales, manages the company's direct and indirect global sales channels. During the past 25 years, Johnson has held a number of high-level positions in the fields of electrical distribution, lighting manufacturing and lighting controls. Those include heading up the intelligent lighting systems unit of Tyco, a Fortune 500 company; serving as the president and chief executive officer of Telemics Inc. of Louisville, Kentucky; and as the director of ECS Lighting Control Ltd., which is based in the United Kingdom.
