Company Overview:

Borst Landscape & Design (Borst) is an award-winning full-service landscape firm specializing in large-scale residential design/build projects and upscale lawn and grounds services throughout northern New Jersey. Founded in 1989, the company has received recognition from numerous national and industry organizations including the New Jersey Landscape Contractors Association, the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) and Landscape Management Magazine. These awards recognized Borst’s excellence in design, implementation and maintenance as well as the company’s employee, education and safety programs.

History:

Mark C. Borst founded Borst Landscape & Design in Wyckoff, N.J., while earning his degrees in Landscape Architecture and Ornamental Horticulture at Rutgers University’s Cook College. In 1995, the company introduced a complete, environmentally sensitive, organic lawn and tree care program. The company’s customer base had expanded significantly, and Borst acquired new headquarters in Allendale, N.J., in the fall of 2002 to embark on an aggressive growth plan. Today, the firm has expanded its services and reached more than $7 million in annual revenues. The company currently employs more than 80 people.

Recently, Borst opened three new divisions. In 2007, Borst introduced Borst Organic®, the company’s private label for organic products that treat lawn, trees and shrubs “with the science of nature…naturally.” In 2008, the firm launched an Estate Services division, offering upscale residential clients a combination of lawn and garden maintenance services comparable to those of a full-time gardener. In addition, the company established Borst Snow Management, LLC to serve commercial snow removal customers in response to continued expansion of the commercial division, which remains one of the fastest-growing areas of the business, providing services to office, retail, multi-family and industrial properties.

Services:

Design/Build: Qualified landscape designers carefully plan each project from concept to completion. Beginning with a comprehensive site analysis, the process leads to a fully developed landscape master plan. The designers work to create outdoor spaces or “rooms” that can incorporate privacy plantings, perennial gardens and custom landscape masonry including walkways, patios and stone walls. These plans can also incorporate swimming pools or ponds as well as other water features. Working hand in hand with the designers, the construction crews handle everything from site preparation to resolving grading and drainage issues. Specialized “hardscape crews” handle all of the masonry work, while the “green crews” are responsible for preparation of the bed areas and the final installation of all of the plantings.

Lawn Care: Borst has earned a respected reputation for its hallmark lawn program, which focuses on using organic materials from Borst Organic®. The company avoids synthetic fertilization and harsh chemicals by promoting optimum growing conditions and natural resistance to pests and diseases. Using a holistic approach, known in the field as Integrated Pest Management (IPM), Borst has made a name for itself as the premier landscaping firm in northern New Jersey focused on “green” practices. Through site assessment, periodic monitoring, and preventative applications, Borst is able to lower incidents of pest and pathogen problems and significantly reduce its use of pesticide products.

Landscape Maintenance: Weekly maintenance personnel are responsible for providing clients with consistent and superior service. Lawn cutting, edging, garden weeding and cleaning of all hard surfaces are a regular part of this program. Enhancement crews back up the weekly service teams and provide planting, mulching, pruning and lawn renovation services. Borst’s primary focus is customer service and satisfaction.

Garden Care, Design and Display: For landscapes that burst with color and texture, Borst designs and installs seasonal garden displays, as well as container and window box arrangements. The team also provides complete ongoing care of annual and perennial beds – including pruning, weeding, fertilizing and pest control – from spring garden clean-up to fall cut-back.

Estate Services: For a previously under-serviced niche, this comprehensive program offers upscale residential clients a combination of the company’s lawn and garden services as well as horticultural expertise all within a single unified program. Lawn crews keep grasses fresh, while the garden and maintenance team manages planting and care of annuals and perennials, including detail pruning, perennial cut backs and periodic plantings, so that landscapes are vibrant throughout the year.

Borst Organic®: Responding to increased customer concern for ‘green’ service, this new service provides a lawn, tree and shrub program that incorporates a newly developed, environmentally-friendly private-label product line as well as natural treatment methods that improve disease resistance, increase stress tolerance and maintain healthy growing conditions.

Borst Snow Management, LLC: This new division serves Borst’s commercial clients. As a leader in the snow and ice management industry and a member of the Snow and Ice Management Association, Borst feels very strongly about using environmentally safe products for snow removal. These products are non-toxic, biodegradable, and much less corrosive to the hardscape as well as curbside lawn, plants and shrubs.

Educational and Informational Services:Borst provides consumers with valuable information on gardening and landscape management. The company’s interactive web site, currently undergoing a total redesign, allows visitors to click on design photos for detailed information about various design elements. The web site also contains a plant library, which enables consumers to research perennials, annuals or plants for their landscape designs and provides answers to some of the most frequently asked questions. In addition, the company produces a quarterly newsletter with timely seasonal tips and essential information about gardens and landscapes.
