April 20: Inserra Supermarkets, CarePoint Health, Diabetes Foundation and AngelaCares to Launch Free Community Diabetes Education Program in Jersey City
Ongoing Program will Meet the Third Thursday of Every Month

JERSEY CITY, N.J., April 20, 2017 – On Thursday, April 20, Inserra Supermarkets, CarePoint Health, AngelaCares and the Diabetes Foundation will launch a free Community Diabetes Education Program, which will be held on the third Thursday of every month from 5:30 – 7 p.m. The six-month program will take place at the Mary Bethune Center at 140 Martin Luther King Drive in Jersey City. Residents of Hudson County and the surrounding area living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes are invited to attend.

Michelle Jansen, coordinator at the Diabetes Foundation, and Lynette Hem-Lee, R.D., registered dietitian of Inserra Supermarkets’ ShopRite of Jersey City, will lead the program, and a light, “teachable” dinner will be served. During each session, Jansen and Hem-Lee will focus on nutrition, physical activity, medication management and other key topics for diabetes care. Maureen Williams, R.D., C.D.E., who created the program, will serve as speaker at a number of classes along with other caring medical professionals specializing in diabetes care.

In particular, attendees will learn how to improve blood sugar numbers and overall health; receive recipes, cooking and shopping tips; and gain valuable expertise from diabetes professionals. Giveaways to help better manage diabetes will be available as well.

“The incidence of diabetes grows increasingly prevalent each day in New Jersey, with nearly 1 in 10 people now living with the disease,” said Roberta Schmidt, executive director of the Diabetes Foundation. “Unfortunately, many of them never receive the proper education on managing diabetes. The Diabetes Foundation, CarePoint Health, AngelaCares and Inserra Supermarkets have teamed up to help change that by offering free programs for anyone living with type 1 or type 2 diabetes or pre-diabetes.”
